THE GREAT ARC - The dramatic tale of how India was mapped and Everest was named , John Keay, Harper Collins, London, 2000,VG+ 182 page hardback VG+ jacket, B&W plates, maps - The great Indian arc of Meridian, begun in 1800, was the longest measurement of the earth;s surface ever to have been attempted. its 1600 miles of inch-perfect survey took nearly 50 years, cost more lives than most contemporary wars and involved equations more complex than any in the pre-computer age - completed by George Everest - some instruments weighed half a ton, observations completed from flimsy towers some 90 feet off the ground....malaria wiped out whole survey parties...and tigers and scorpions took their toll. And, they found/measured Everest on the way...terrific as are all John Keay's books Ex libris John Nankervis $70
