1970S MOUNT COOK GUIDES & PROMINENT MEMBERS OF THEN FLEDGLING NZ MOUNTAIN GUIDES ASSOCIATION.
LtoR (top row): NICK BANKS, Taranaki tiger who descended upon Mt Cook scene in late 60s to guide at Mt Cook for years - went on to form 'The Three B’s' (Banks, Ball and Brice) guiding company based at Twizel, formidable climber on hard shoe-string expeditions to places like TDF, known as the 2nd Kiwi to climb Chomolungma in mid 70s (on German expedition led by Gerhard Smatz), guided Carstensz pyramid for Adventure Consultants but brush with serious altitude sickness while guiding North side Chomolungma meant he gave up altitude work in favour of guiding North wall of Eiger and on hard rock in Wales, where he still lives. Can be found in summer sailing his yacht around Northern Scottish Isles. To me, the funniest guide there ever was with a never ending fund of hilarious stories that kept clients amused when things got tough.
GARY BALL, flamboyant ‘blond bombshell’ Gary guided at Mt Cook for years (26 ascents Aoraki), partner in Three B’s, climbed Pik Kommunizma in Soviet Pamirs among other amateur expeditions (attempt North face Kangchenjunga) before forming partnership with Rob Hall to climb and later guide Chomolungma under their company Adventure Consultants, Together with Rob, climbed "Seven Summits in Seven Months” (1990), after serious brush with altitude sickness on K2 in (1992), died on Dhaulagiri from altitude problems (1993).
ANDREW SMITH, tough Canterbury climber who went on to guide at Mt Cook, then together with partner Dagmar Gobat became the last custodians of Ball hut, until it was burned down.
BRIAN CARTER, Brian made the transition from hard amateur climber to professional guide at Mt Cook however, a skin condition that forced him to avoid bright sun, meant had to take up managing Alpine guides, Mt Cook which he did successfully for 20+ years.
