HIMMLER'S CRUSADE, Christopher Hale, Bantum Press, London, 2003, 1st edn., VG+ 422 page hardback in VG jacket, B&W plates, previous owner's name fep., - the remarkable story of the 1938 Nazi Ernst Schafer expedition to Tibet -
This book tells the extraordinary tale of an expedition from 1938-39, led by Ernst Schaffer, SS officer, attempting to find the origin of the Aryan race. The German expedition also set out to compare Third Reich Swastikas with Tibetan Yungtrungs (in Sanskrit-the Svas-Tika). The Yungtrung is a traditional symbol of peace and longevity. The Nazis hijacked it, tilted it an an angle, and forever tarnished it with associations of death and warfare. Seen across India and Asia today, the original symbol puzzles Western visitors. In fact, when HH Dalai Lama showed up in Germany, seated on a throne with Yungtrung symbols emblazoned on it, the Germans were horrified, as the Swastika has been banned in Germany since 1945.$50
